Museum of Music

The seat of the Czech Museum of Music is located in the former Baroque church of St. Mary Magdalene at Lesser Town, built in the 17th century based on the Francesco Caratti’s project. The church was gradually rebuilt after the closure of the Dominican Monastery in 1783. Among other things, it served as a post office, Police barracks and archive. The unusual symbiosis of the early Baroque ecclesiastical architecture with the classicist utilitarian adjustment and the recently finished reconstruction to suit the Museum purposes offers the visitors an impressive combination of monumentality and detail.

Anyone who enters the building is struck by the grandiose assembly hall and the special magic touch reminiscent of the changes brought about by different eras. The National Museum has taken this unique opportunity to revitalise this space, once decorated with Baroque masterpieces and reverberated by allegedly one of the largest pipe organs of the 17th century Prague, and reintroduce the sound of music in its walls.
