The popularity of beer has been well documented for several generations of Prague inhabitants.

A hundred years ago, there were many old-style burgess breweries in the New Town, where the brewing licence was handed down from father to son.

Besides the homely pubs, the people of the Old Town also enjoyed the small breweries with their unique atmosphere, where the "homemade" beer was consumed on the spot.

The old chronicles state that in 1434 a house was built on this site by the maltster, Vanek Zpevak, who lived here and held a licence to brew beer, the so-called "brewing right". The current building was built by the well-known Prague architect Frantisek Buldra in 1902.
