In 1872, Josefina Goetz, the head of the nuns of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, bought of the manufacturer Ried of Riedenstein a mansion Reg. No 103 located at the Smíchov district, built in the gardens of a residence once owned by Count Clary. She also bought the estate No 167 and built there a new nunnery with a chapel. The two premises combined served as a French-style boarding school for girls from wealthy families where lessons were conducted in French.
On June 30th, 1882, the foundation stone was laid at the location for a new chapel in the Neo Gothic style based on the project by P. Ghislain Béthun, an Emmaus/Beuron Benedictine. The construction was undertaken by the builder Ferdinand Zehengruber. The construction was completed and the church consecrated in 1884. Subsequently, the interiors were finished and the murals painted by the Beuron artists.
The objects of reverence were the remains of Flavia Victoria, a Roman martyr, located in the church crypt, donated to the congregation by the Empress Maria Anna. Towards the end of the 20th century, the reconstruction of the chapel commenced to restore the interior to its original state, including the wall paintings. The reconstruction was successfully completed.
Thanks to its unique interior and inimitable atmosphere that underlines the exceptional and distinctive character of any social or cultural event, the chapel is a sought after location for various events.
